Midland Christian Church’s Official Statement on BaptismNovember 18, 2011In light of recent events, it has become unclear to some as to the beliefs Midland Christian Church holds in reference to Baptism and its importance in the salvation process. Midland Christian Church has not changed its beliefs or stance on baptism in the almost 50 years of our existence and it is of the utmost importance that we bring clarity to this issue. So it is in this regard that I, JR Lightstein, Interim Senior Pastor along with the Elder Board: Kim Wilson, Chairman and Steve Crosson, Elder, submit to you this official statement on baptism and salvation dated November 18, 2011.(In this statement, the word “man” stands for all of mankind and includes both male and female. Also, Midland Christian Church may be abbreviated to MCC.)At Midland Christian Church the Bible, God’s Holy Word is our final authority. We believe that the Bible is one whole message of God’s plan to us. We do not believe that it is a bunch of individual verses thrown together. We will always look at Scripture within context (For example there are Scripture verses that say a person must believe- ex. John 1:12, but there is no mention of repentance. We believe that when you look at the whole Salvation process in context throughout Scripture, it is clear that repentance is required). We at MCC believe that the Bible clearly teaches that salvation is a gift of grace from God through our Lord, Jesus Christ. However we also believe that one must accept that gift in order to receive it. If there was no need for man to respond, then everyone would be saved. We at MCC believe that the gift is from God and of God through Jesus Christ; the grace that he bestows has nothing to do with man or man’s deeds:“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9, NIV, emphasis added.)We at MCC believe that faith without deeds is dead:“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?” (James 2:14, NIV)We at MCC believe that a person must believe in Jesus in order to be saved:“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—” (John 1:12, NIV, emphasis added)We at MCC believe that a person must confess Jesus is Lord in order to be saved:“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9, NIV, emphasis added.) We at MCC believe that a person must repent for the forgiveness of their sins in order to be saved:“I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.” (Acts 20:21, NIV, emphasis added.) “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38, NIV, emphasis added.) We at MCC believe that a person must be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins in order to be saved:“Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38, NIV) We at MCC do not believe in a “just walk down the aisle, say a prayer and you are saved faith”, we believe that when someone believes and confesses with genuine faith it is backed up by repentance and baptism.““If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15, NIV)Therefore, we at MCC believe that in order to be saved, one must:BelieveConfessRepentBe BaptizedWe at MCC do not believe that any of these things save by themselves:Belief alone does not saveConfession alone does not saveRepentance alone does not saveBaptism alone does not saveIf someone believes, confesses, repents and dies without being baptized, we at MCC believe the following 3 things:1. God is Omniscient (He knows all things including the hearts of man):“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.” (Psalm 139:1–3, NIV) 2. God is both fair and just:“Let the Lord judge the peoples. Vindicate me, Lord, according to my righteousness, according to my integrity, O Most High. Bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure— you, the righteous God who probes minds and hearts.” (Psalm 7:8–9, NIV) 3. God will know the heart of a person and know if that person was not baptized because of a rebellious heart or because of circumstances that prevented them from being baptized. God will then act justly according to his omniscience and perfect will. Finally we at MCC do not believe that baptism saves; we believe that God saves and He has shown us how in His Holy Word.Humbly submitted this 18th day of November, 2011,JR Lightstein, Interim Senior PastorKim Wilson, Chairman of the Elder BoardSteve Crosson, Elder
